Despite the longest of delays, the debut Youngbloodz record, AGAINST DA GRAIN--a rather straight-forward, lyrically tight collection of hooks and Dirty South drawls and skits--was a qualified success and featured the rap radio hit "U Way" and the shoulda-been-a-hit groove "85." The Atlanta duo of Sean Paul (not the dancehall-pop superstar) and J-Bo return in late 2003 with sophomore effort, the fittingly titled DRANKIN' PATNAZ, a bit more refined and far-reaching, but certainly a far-from-sober collection of controlled, tongue-twisting fury.

DRANKIN' PATNAZ opens as hard as the exterior of a 40-bottle with the screams of the "king of crunk" himself, Lil' Jon, screamin' before launching into the defiant "Damn," a twisting anthem for the discerning, intellectual thug. The duo displays skills at getting the club bouncing on hypnotic tracks like "Sean Paul (Get 'Em Crunk)" and "Hustle," and throughout their second offering unveil an ability to stretch the elastic of the crunked-out Dirty South sound to its limits. Sean Paul and J-Bo consistently reveal the filial facility to play off one another, an ability which distinguishes Youngbloodz from the mass of crews emerging in the umbra of Outkast's success, making DRANKIN' PATNAZ a worthwhile listen.
