Snoop Dogg Album: “Bones”

If you watch Bones, you probably already have a taste for the modern, perfect music incorporated into the show. Here are a few good reasons to get this CD:

"Running up that Hill" from 2nd season's "Judas on a Pole" - with Placebo's unique, ultra-modern feel and deep, moving lyrics, I for one listened to this song over and over again, unable to stop craving the singular sound of this song.

"Angel" - a beautiful balled worth buying in its own right, very utterly Bones.

"Bring on the Wonder" - an oh-so-sad song once again worth its own CD, belonging utterly in the Bones compendium.

If that's not enough, it'll hold you over until season 3 comes out.

The Bones theme works fine, but honestly is not the reason I bought this soundtrack. There are several compelling reasons that I wanted this on my shelf--first, Sinead O'Connor's "Angel". Whatever you feel about Ms. O'Connor, her voice is a stunning instrument, and when unleashed on an emotional powerhouse like this song, I get chills. If you are only going to hear one track, that is the one that I would go for. Still, stopping with "Angel", however good it may be, would be missing out on some other wonderful songs. Kate Bush's "Running up that Hill" is one of the most intense pop songs ever written, stark and magical, but the 1980's version from Kate's "Hounds of Love" is a little dated to today's ears [don't let this stop you from learning to love Kate Bush--she is magnificent, and "Hounds of Love" is a pop masterpiece...but I digress]. Placebo's cover of this song is found on this soundtrack, and it is a stunner in its own right. They have lost none of the emotional content, and have focused it even further; if it were not for the presence of O'Connor's "Angel", this still would have been a good reason to buy the album. Eliza Lumley's cover of Radiohead's "Black Star" takes an odd turn--it is cabaret infused, which I would never have thought of. It is not completely successful, although it is interesting and enjoyable; but after hearing what Placebo did with a cover, it makes me long for a more placebo-esque approach here. The remainder of the tracks are by and large excellent singer/songwriter tracks, all quite enjoyable. I particularly enjoy the Sara Lov tune "Fountain", but there is not a dud among them. The extended mix of the Bones theme that ends the album helps remind you that this is a Bones soundtrack and not a Lilith Fair sampler, and it works no better or worse than you would expect. If you are a Bones fan, then pick up the album, you won't regret it. If you are not a Bones fan, then get this for "Angel" and "Running Up That Hill". You'll enjoy the rest as well.

.... I brought this CD almost a year ago and it still gets much rotation. It has all of the attributes of a quality breaks CD. Excellent mixing and deft, funky, quirky beats and basslines that don't stray too far to the darker side of breaks.

The key here is selection. There's a generous smattering of deep, teeth-clenchingly satisfying bangers ("M.A.C.E.", "Mr. Jingles", "What Sounds Are"), punctuated by steady, bubbling burners ("Turquoise", "Q-Tohn", "High Rollin'"). The beginning three tracks start off the CD nicely with a nod to the funkier side of nu breaks. When I say that, it's not a reference to the "funky breaks" genre; just listen to "Come Alive" - it's infectious and has the unmistakeable rhythmic, deep, percussive dopeness that nu breaks is all about.

Also, this CD far outshines most of the other breaks CDs out there. Tayo's 4YK contribution had potential (I mean, it's a good CD) but suffered from a lack of cohesion and application of some well-heard tunes (how many dang mixes is "Gyromancer" on??). And Bedrock Breaks was also hit and miss.

But believe me, Koma and Bones' Y4K offering has got to be the sure shot.

The Bones Soundtrack is great. Plus, for once, a movie soundtrack that actually has something to do with the movie. The majority of the songs deal with the Jimmy Bones character. The Jimmy Bones theme gets a little bit played out, but for the most part the album is refreshing and a fun listen. Aside from Snoop Dogg; Eminem/D-12, Eastsidaz, XZibit, Kurupt, Roscoe, Kokane, Doggys Angels, Bad Azz, Butch Cassidy, and Nate Dogg all play a role in the soundtrack. This album is unique, but a welcomed change in the Sountrack/Rap genre. Definitely worth checking out.

i likede the cd but when i got it i was hoping for the less well known stuff. those odd-ball songs that u don't know.
