Pimp C Album: “Pimpalation [PA]”
Description :
As the incarcerated half of criminally overlooked Houston hip-hop duo UGK, Pimp C had to sit behind bars while the style of music he helped usher in (with colleagues such as Three 6 Mafia, Mike Jones, and Paul Wall) became the dominant force in mainstream hip-hop. While his partner in UGK, Bun-B, hit it big in 2005 with his solo debut, TRILL, Pimp C's release PIMPALATION serves to balance out the scales in his favor (even if the scales of justice tipped unfavorably). <p>PIMPALATION is as glitzy and glamorous as the lifestyles of the crunk and famous can get, with sung choruses and lusher production than has been heard out of the Swishahouse contingent since its early days. In fact, the standout tracks lean as much toward the '90s West Coast G-funk of Nate Dogg and Warren G as they do Pimp's woozy style. Tracks such as "Free" (cribbing a chorus from Tom Petty's hit "Free Fallin'") and the Mike Jones collaboration, "Pourin' Up," demonstrate that even jailtime hasn't taken away Pimp C's spirit or his ability to turn a clever verse.

- A Notch Below Sweet James Jones Stories

like I said in the title of my review this album is a notch below sweet james jones stories. The reason was that it is a notch below it is because a couple of the tracks like that one with ali & gipp were sorry. Too much of them and not enough Pimp C.

- Never disappoints

Pimp C is back and does his thing on this album. I listened to the whole cd from beginning to the end and pimp c murders the beats. The only thing i didn't like was that there are a lot of guest appearances and pimp is sometimes overshadowed, but overall this is a great cd.

- Welcome home Pimp C ; Pimpalation puts Pimp C back on the map

Ever since UGK released "Wood Wheel", I have been a fan of pretty much anything that they have released. My 2 favorite discs from UGK are "Ridin' Dirty" and "Dirty Money". Once Chad Butler was locked up and Bun B was able to retain focus, he was the main one behind the Free Pimp C movement. He was able to single handedly hold UGK down while Pimp C was away by the various collaborations that he was featured on, his solo CD, "Trill" and just by word of mouth by not letting anyone forget the other half of UGK, Pimp C. Ever since Pimp C was released in December of 2005, we have heard him on various collaborations such as a retooled remix of Bun B's "Get Throwed", a track with E-40, Juelz Santana and Bun B called "White Girl", "Chunk Up The Deuce" w/Lil Keke, Paul Wall & Bun B, Lil Flip's remix to "U'z A Trick" w/Bun B, Chamillionaire's remix to "Ridin' Dirty" w/Bun B and even two r&b tracks "Dope Girl" w/Brooke Valentine and "Love Song" w/Missez.

Pimp C even released a DVD a couple of months back also entitled "Pimpalation" just so everyone could see the moments right after he was released from jail, scenes from Pimp C in the studio after his release and just Pimp C and various other rappers such as Bun B, Trae, Z-Ro and others just talking about Texas, Rap A Lot Records and things in general.

The 1st two tracks that I heard from Pimp C's solo project were "Pourin' Up" w/Bun B and Mike Jones and another track that didn't make the CD entitled "Hold Up" w/Paul Wall and Bun B. "Pourin' Up" ends up being the perfect choice as the 1st single as the chorus comes from one of the famous lines that Pimp C made famous on UGK's collaboration with Jay Z, "Big Pimpin'". Mike Jones doesn't make or break the track with his verse, but Bun B closes things out something lovely with his verse. "Free" samples Tom Petty's "Free Falling" and definitely is the anthem for Pimp C to let everyone know that he is enjoying his freedom and how he likes not being locked up in the Texas State prison system any longer. "Knockin' Doors Down" which features Lil Keke and P.O.P. and is produced by Myke Diesel, is clearly my choice for the best song on "Pimpalation". Pimp C takes a break on pimpin' for a minute to try to unite all the Southern rappers who still can't seem to get along with each other such as TI & Lil Flip, Slim Thug & Z-Ro and Paul Wall & Chamillionaire. In so many words, Pimp C lets everyone know that until we unite as rappers from practically the same form of music, we won't be able to maximize the money that they can make from being rappers. P.O.P. and Lil Keke take care of the rest and you definitely will be listening to this track more than once. "Rock For Rock" features Scarface, Willie D and Bun B and will remind alot of people of "Pushin'" from Bun B's "Trill" CD that featured Bun B, Scarface & Young Jeezy. Everyone gives impressive verses as the song is nice but the subject matter has been covered before. "Working The Wheel" features Slim Thug and the chrous uses part of Pimp C's verse from Three 6 Mafia's and UGK's "Sippin' On Some Syrup". Slim Thug gets things started with one of Pimp C's famous quotes and the 2 rappers take care of the rest on Mike Dean's tight track. "Bobby & Whitney" features 8Ball & MJG w/Pimp C and the collaboration definitely works in my opinion. Mr. Lee, who produced various tracks on Slim Thug's "Already Platinum" and Bun B, Pimp C, Young Jeezy and Jay Z's "Get Throwed" does the production on "Bobby & Whitney". 8Ball & MJG's "Ridin' High", their follow up to "Living Legends" should be coming out in the next few months. Pimp C resurrects Big Mike's "Havin' Thangs" from Big Mike's CD "Somethin' Serious" on "Havin' Thangs '06" as Big Mike still shows that he has the skills that he had on the Geto Boys' "Til Death Do Us Part" and on "Somethin' Serious". To be honest, it's just real nice to hear Big Mike on a verse, because it has been awhile since I had heard him on anything. "Overstand Me" features Chamillionaire & Trae. Pimp C was featured on Trae's remix to "Swang" and had a nice verse on the track. Pimp C blends in well with verses from Trae's and Chamillionaire's as the track's beat sounds very familar to "Dirty Money's" "Look At Me". To close things out Pimp C, Tonya Herron and Z-Ro bring back Aaron Hall's "I Miss You" to surprising results as Pimp C and Z-Ro give heartfelt tributes to fallen family members.

The problems that I have with "Pimpalation" is that some of these songs are unbearable. What I mean is that there are some songs that you won't want to hear more than once unless you are at a house party, club or strip club. The first example is definitely "The Honey" which features Jazze Pha and Jody Breeze from Boyz N Da Hood. The track might as well be Jody Breeze featuring Pimp C and Jazze Pha as much as you hear them on the track. You will not want to hear this track more than once. Then just when you think this is the only time you'll hear Jazze Pha's "Ladies and gentlemen", he shows up again on "On Your Mind" which features Gipp, Ali, Big Zak & Jagged Edge. I want to present Pimp C with a disclaimer: NEVER DO A SONG WITH JAZZE PHA AGAIN!!!! Trust me, you will not want to listen to "The Honey" or "On Your Mind" again. On the "Like That" (Remix), Webbie's and Lil Boosie's rhymes are real kindergarten. I do not need to hear what they want to do with Ciara, Beyonce or Trina and I definitely don't need to hear Lil Boosie try to rhyme Ashanti and Beyonce. Pimp C even talks about what he would try to do with Keyshia Cole. I understand that this is just a bounce track but if this is what a V12 Boyz CD is going to sound like I'll just pick up the next UGK CD.

Overall, I am just glad that Pimp C is out of jail and able to release "Pimpalation". Hopefully, he has learned from his past mistakes and he can just spend time with his family & friends and just enjoy life to the fullest. While "Pimpalation" isn't up there with UGK's "Ridin' Dirty" and "Dirty Money" it is still a project that you can listen to and respect. I would rate "Pimpalation" 3 and a half stars. If you enjoyed Bun B's solo project "Trill" then you will definitely enjoy Pimp C's "Pimpalation". I definitely can't wait until the next UGK CD, especially now that the Pimp is FREE!!!!
