<p>The title of this debut album by southern rapper Petey Pablo tells a lot about the context. Rather than just a bunch of randomly assembled rhymes, DIARY OF A SINNER is a concept album of sorts, in which a gangsta slowly but surely unravels the complex, unsavory details of his life, from the first fall from grace on through. There's a strong religious underpinning to the album as well, as the conflict between faith in God and the pursuit of the gangsta lifestyle is reiterated throughout these tracks. There's also a gospel sensibility that crops up occasionally amid the blazing hip-hop tracks. The end of this sinner's story is a happy one, though, as Pablo delivers "My Testimony," stepping back from the violence and taking solace in the love of his family. It doesn't hurt matters that Timbaland offers some of the distinctive, sonically rich production that is his trademark, giving DIARY OF THE SINNER a compelling audio sheen.
