<p>The title of this debut album by southern rapper Petey Pablo tells a lot about the context. Rather than just a bunch of randomly assembled rhymes, DIARY OF A SINNER is a concept album of sorts, in which a gangsta slowly but surely unravels the complex, unsavory details of his life, from the first fall from grace on through. There's a strong religious underpinning to the album as well, as the conflict between faith in God and the pursuit of the gangsta lifestyle is reiterated throughout these tracks. There's also a gospel sensibility that crops up occasionally amid the blazing hip-hop tracks. The end of this sinner's story is a happy one, though, as Pablo delivers "My Testimony," stepping back from the violence and taking solace in the love of his family. It doesn't hurt matters that Timbaland offers some of the distinctive, sonically rich production that is his trademark, giving DIARY OF THE SINNER a compelling audio sheen.

- Carolina's on the Map
One thing that I can really appreciate about Petey Pablo is that he has a unique sound. He can give a track some meaning, some soul, and some thought. He doesn't get stuck some of the more standard themes in modern rap, but rather tries to put something behind his music rather than laying out some meaningless drivel to accompany a creative beat. A couple noticable themes include, well, putting North Carolina on the "rap map" for one I suppose, but also an inner struggle between good and evil within himself. I find both the theme and the way he presents it a refreshing clash to the common, more boring rap themes.
I think, despite the success of "Raise Up", that "Diary of a Sinner" is one of the better tracks on the album, as Pablo sort of shows us what drives him and artistically conveys his thoughts in ways that most wouldn't even approach for fear of being labeled 'soft'. Let me assure you that the word 'soft' has no business being mentioned with Petey Pablo.
The beats on this album are nothing short of good, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that they are fantastic. Timbaland shows up a couple of times, enhancing the depth of the album. The first five tracks are solid, with "Told Y'all" as a personal favorite, but there are a few of the tracks that just seem like filler to me. The CD seems to tail off before ending strong with "Diary of a Sinner". Most people will find themselves focusing on a few songs and ignoring the others - depending on taste.
Overall, I am impressed with Petey Pablo's freshman album. With a little more experience, he could rise to an elite level. The potential is there. The voice is there. The beats are there. It just needs a little more work.

Petey deserves more props on dis' one than any thing[including a wack ass review from "Like that"]. I really admire his style and reppin' a city not too far from where I am. Yes that's right I'm from Memphis,Tn.,a place where true artist really don't get the props they really deserve such as [playa fly, etc.,]. Much props to one of the greatest producers of all time [keep up the good work anyway] TIMBALAND!!!! much props to bubba sparxxx!! That damn "Still writin' in my diary" need to gone drop!!! In my review all i'm sayin' is if people were to get this album they truly won't regret it!!! And it ain't just no damn football stadium music either gottdamnit!!! It can be bumped any where; in the car, at work, outside, and especially in da' club shawty.!!! Oh and kinfolk, don't forget my favorites are I,919,live debaco, fool for love[every true thug can relate to a lowdown ass female],raise up,truth about me, ya'll aint ready[they asses still ain't; and hatin'], i told ya'll, la di da da da, funroom, do dat, didn't I, and test of my faith. - The Best Album Ever
If you haven't got this CD yet then you are missing out on the best unheard music out there. He is the most underrated rapper in the game (He doesn't deserve that). His beats and rhymes are unlike no other. Git it while its hot.

- Should of Let Timbaland Produce the Whole Album
I couldn't wait for this album to drop. It finally did and it didn't come to how I would expect it to be. I'm not saying the album is garbage, it's different from any other rap albums. The production could of been better. I thought this album would be more on the Lil' Jon, UGK, or Mystikal flava. What saves the album are the songs Raise Up + the remix and I. "I" is the best song on the album and I can listen to it over and over again. Tracks from 5-10 are OK and the rest are hmmmmmmmm. I like Petey Pablo as a rapper and I hope next time he should have Tim produce the album. Timbaland is one of the hottest producers.

- I hate rap but I can't help loving this album
I am not a rap lover. I grew tired of rap not long after Doug E. Fresh's single "The Show", but I turned on the TV to the channel that my sixteen year old daughter had been watching and there was Petey Pablo. The video for "Blow Your Whistle" his new single off of the "Still Writing In My Diary" album and I was mesmerized. I purchased "Diary of a Sinner" and I can't get enough of Petey Pablo.
This is the first CD I've listened to sense Whitney Houston's second album that I listen to over and over and over and over again. The content of his songs, for the most part are funny, fresh, and intelligent. I sense that there is quite a bit of substance to the man. "I Told Y'all", "I", "Raise Up", "La Di Dah", "Fool For Love", "Live Debaco" all rank as my favorites. Of course, Timbalands tracks are superb, but Petey Pab's rap style and content are phenomenal. His turn of phrase and inflection on some parts of his songs are outstanding. The language is very rough as in most rap albums, but the songs are so good I listened "past" the rough language to the content, to what he was actually saying. If I could I'd give this album ten stars.
