Descripción (en inglés) :
Additional personnel: J. Holiday, Purple Popcorn, Letoya Luckett, Junior Reid, Seed, Cham, Bun B.
Recording information: Black Out, Miami, FL.
Washington Heights rapper Mims performs a stylistic tightrope act on his debut album, MUSIC IS MY SAVIOR. The lead single "This is Why I'm Hot" established him as a New York MC who embraced the Dirty South sound, but the crossover appeal doesn't stop there. From start to finish, MUSIC IS MY SAVIOR emphasizes Mims's versatility, as he dips into crunk, hyphy, screw, and g-funk (see verse one of "Why I'm Hot"), all the while repping for New York City. While critics may claim his chameleon act adds little originality to the styles he dabbles in, they can't deny that he flips them all reasonably well. The Bad Seed, Bun B, Junior Reid, Cham, and Latoya Luckett are featured.

Wow when I heard "This is why I'm hot" I thought the lyrics were written by a 1st grader. This is why I'm hot. I'm hot cuz u not. Rinse and repeat. WTF? This is the kind witty lyricism that's killing rap. Repetitive lyrics and beats. "This is why I'm hot" WORST SONG OF THE YEAR. 2006-2007 will go down in infamy as the years rap officially died. Welcome the new school of whack rappers taking over Da game: MIMS, Jibbs, Young Joc, Franchise Boyz, D-4-L, UNK, Baby Boy da Prince. Worst music I've ever heard!

- 2-1/2 stars -- THIS is why he's hot?

Shawn Mims' single "This Is Why I'm Hot" indicates another one of those cases where a song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 before I'd ever heard of it, and when I finally did hear it, I wished I STILL hadn't heard of it. But that's actually one of the better songs on his debut, Music Is My Savior.

Chandler and Norfeest's respective reviews are pretty accurate, but I have to say that I actually don't think that MIMS is trying to copy Jay-Z's style. MIMS' style seems to be nothing but wack similes scattered throughout been-there-done-that topics. This is evident by lame tracks like "Big Black Train", "Like This" (with its repetitive chorus and bridge) and especially "Girlfriend's Favorite MC". And as far as when Bun-B and Bad Seed show up for the obligatory screwed song "They Don't Wanna Play", the only saving grace is, unsurprisingly, Bun's verse; Seed is having trouble keeping up with the beat, and the chorus sounds like the beat was jacked from Lil' Wayne's "Cash Money Millionaires".

The hidden track "I Did You Wrong" (an ode to sleeping around) starts out fine but then gets ridiculous once you reach the second verse. And as I stated before, "This Is Why I'm Hot" isn't that great, especially with the chorus: "I'm hot `cause I'm fly/You ain't `cause you not". Ooooh; THAT'S telling `em. And the reggae remix of it doesn't go anywhere either. Then there's "Cop It", which has its own situation: the beat is one that you'll either think is great or annoying, but in either case, it isn't helped by MIMS saying things like "I'm hotter than cooked food". "Just Like That" has too many sorry comparisons to mention, and "Superman" is just plain wack.

There is also a little lack of creativeness with the song titles ("Like This" followed by "Just Like That"). And you know an album is bad when the best moments are the intro and outro (the latter features crooning by someone called Purple Popcorn). If MIMS truly thinks music is his savior, then maybe it's time to change denominations.

- Uninspired & Unorigonal (Rating: 5 out of 10- -2.5 stars)

Mims' debut album "Music Is My Savior" has been out for a minute and I've been listening to it. Mostly because his supporters say to "give him a chance", and I decided to before I wrote off his album. I understand that he's been through a lot (both his parents died) and is going through some more issues as well, such as a lawsuit with his album cover in Germany (which might explain why Amazon doesn't have it on here anymore as of right now). After a few listens, I have to say that he is totally uninspired and unorigonal on his album. He had a lead single "This Is Why I'm Hot" out earlier this year. If it were up to me, I'd change the adjetive in the song title to the word "wack", because he gives plenty of examples on this song as well as this album, "I'm hot cuz I'm fly//you ain't cuz you're not". Thats rhymes that fourteen year old kids would have wrote.

Now the real meat of the album: My question for this is that is his name Sean Mims, or is it Shawn Carter?? Like many listeners say and the very first thing that pointed out to me when I first heard this album is that his flow is a spin off of Jay-Z's flow (then again what mainstream New York rapper doesn't do that??) "Girl's Fav MC" is the perfect example of him biting Jay's flow. "Where I Belong" and "Cop It" are more examples (talking and adlibs as well) of his spin off of Jay's flow. On "Just Like That" he says "Some ****** love my swag, they call me Lil' Jigga", my point exactly. Then I think he bites Twista's flow on the song "They Don't Wanna Play" (listen to how he says the last word in every line in his verse). And "Superman" is possibly the worst and the wackest song on here, but thats not saying much.

The album isn't a complete write off though. "Big Black Train" is a good song, and shows that if Mims doesn't bite or spin off other rappers flow, he will have some potential. "Without You" is another good song, where he sound more origonal with the help of Letoya Luckett. I actually like the remix to "This Is Why I'm Hot" becuase of Baby Cham and Jr. Reid. "Don't Cry (Outro)" is probably the best song on the album, because he actually put some heart into the song. A lot of the productuon is good as well, like the lyrically wack but good produced "Like This".

Overall Mims' debut is barely average. Most of the songs on here are completely filler and full of biting. The songs where he puts some heart into, are actually the best songs. "Music Is My Savior" is one of the worst of '07, and I personally believe that if he continues to put out garbage music like this, he going to have to find a new savior, becuase music isn't doing it's job. Peace.

- M.I.M.S. = Making It More Simplistic {2 ½ Stars}

On his debut, Mims sets out to bring NY back (his words, not mine). I don't think this is the kind of album that's going to bring about any kind of ressurgence. Especially since he sounds like/bites Shawn Carter so hard. When he isn't biting, his flow on songs like "Like This", "Superman" (which rehashes the the same beat as his lead single), and "It's Alright" is pretty much nonexistant. And on joints like "Girlfriends Fav MC " and "Cop It" he bites Jay Z so hard (ad libs and all) that they start out sounding like Jay Z tracks. I won't even start on the lame similies. That would require more paragraphs than I normally allot myself.

There are a few songs that are worth a spin or two. In my opinion, "This Is Why I'm Hot" and it's remix are easily the standouts. Then there are joints like "Where I Belong" and "Doctor Doctor" where Mims switches up the topic and produces some solid material (even though they can come off kind of forced). "Just LIke That" is cool because of nice production (despite a godawful hook) and "They Don't Wanna Play" is okay -- it features a decent guest shot from Bad Seed (Bun B. drops a verse too). The only other time I've ever heard Bad Seed was on Apathy's

LP (dope album -- go get it), but don't expect him to come like he did on Ap's album. The intro is interesting because the production is nice and Mims speeds up the flow. The production as a whole ranges from good to decent. Nothing out of this world though.

Music Is My Savior isn't necessarily required listening, but there are worse releases to be put out there in the young year. If you're into beats and don't really listen to the person rapping, you'll love this. If you're into lyrics, I recommend passing on this one. Simply put: there are way too many wack lyrics and lame similies for me to justify buying this brand new. It's cats like this that water the rap game down and cause sales to take a sudden nosedive. I recommend downloading it and testing it out before you actually pay for it.

Standout Tracks: Doctor Doctor, This Is Why I'm Hot [Remix] feat. Cham & Junior Reid (My Favorite), Where I Belong, Intro, They Don't Wanna Play feat. Bun B & Bad Seed, and This Is Why I'm Hot
