John Cena Album: “You Can't See Me [PA]”
Description :
Additional personnel: Esoteric , Bumpy Knuckles.
Recording information: 2005.
It's easy to dismiss athletes who claim to be musicians, particularly if said jocks are professional wrestlers. But World Wrestling Entertainment grappler John Cena's recording debut, YOU CAN'T SEE ME, is an impressive foray into the world of hip-hop. Rap fan Cena boasts an organic flow that seems far beyond any shtick concocted during a marketing session. Backed by Tha Trademarc, he bobs and weaves among funky samples of KRS-One, Killah Priest, and Eric Clapton throughout the home-city shout-out "Beantown," and rocks a West Coast groove on the thumping "Summer Flings."
The WWE champ also holds his own working alongside rap legend Freddie Foxxx (AKA Bumpy Knuckles) on the rubbery funk of "Flow Easy" and hard-edged "Bad, Bad Man." Cena, who refers to his devoted fans as the Chain Gang, is never far from his man-of-the-people persona. The Massachusetts native incorporates crowd noise from one of his matches into the party anthem "Make It Loud," and tips his hat to the CG on the slow-rolling "Chain Gang Is the Click." And in keeping with his fan-friendly ways, Cena released both clean and explicit versions of YOU CAN'T SEE ME.

- I'm Impressed

Well of course with me being a very big rap fan(and not only rap i listen to all kinds of music) I was still a little skeptical of picking this one up with his whole wrestling thing and yes im a wreslting fan also and i knew that Cena would be coming with the definite underground sound and not alot of mainstream up beat pop rap. The only thing keeping this from being perfect like other reviewers have stated, there's not enough Cena on it and at times he's outshined by his featured artists but still overall this is a surprisingly well produced and delivered album by Cena, even if your not huge on wrestling please try to overlook that about him and see him for his skill on the mic because he has a very good flow about him and it works, so if your a fan of a more old school feel rap record without the flash of the overplayed bling bling, cars, money, women, gangs, guns, and murder then this is somethin you should pick up you wont regret it. Great debut Cena, I cant wait to see if he can keep this going.

- Much better than I expected

Very impressed. Like the Fozzy album I expected this to be horrible. How can you take a gimmick album seriously. I'm not a Cena fan by any means.

That said, I broke down and gave the album a listen this week. Steller use of hip hop to portray a message. "The Time Is Now" & "Bad Bad Man" are very fun energetic tracks that flow better than some of Dre or Snoops work.

By far, the best song here is called "Right Now". It's one of the lighter R&B tracks on his album... One of those songs that just plain makes you feel good about who you are. A song with a deep message about being happy where you are and happy with who you've become. If you have a chance to see the music video for this song give it a look.

Give this CD a chance... I opened my mind. You should too... You'll thank yourself for it.
